#10 stone, also known as #10 limestone, limestone screenings, stone dust, or fine crushed limestone, is a compactable aggregate made from small angular particles and limestone fines. It typically ranges from powder-sized material up to approximately 1/4 inch, although exact gradation may vary by quarry and regional specification.
The combination of fine particles and small limestone chips allows #10 stone to spread evenly, fill surface irregularities, and compact into a smooth, firm layer. When properly graded and tamped, the material locks together tightly, creating a stable surface that helps resist movement and settling.
#10 limestone is commonly used as a leveling or finishing material rather than as a deep structural base. Its fine texture makes it especially useful beneath pavers, patio blocks, retaining wall units, and stepping stones, where a uniform surface is needed for accurate placement. It can also be used to tighten larger aggregate layers, fill small voids, and create compacted walking surfaces.
Because #10 stone contains a high percentage of fines, it provides strong compaction but limited drainage compared with clean stone such as #57 limestone. For best results, it is generally installed as a thin leveling or finishing layer over a properly prepared aggregate base.
