#5 limestone, also known as #5 stone, crushed limestone, clean limestone aggregate, or limestone drainage stone, is a durable, angular aggregate commonly used for construction, drainage, and load-bearing applications. It typically ranges from approximately 3/8 inch to 1 inch in size, although exact gradation may vary by quarry and regional specification.
Because #5 limestone is generally clean and contains little to no stone dust or fines, it allows water to move through the aggregate while maintaining strong structural support. Its crushed, angular edges help the stone interlock and resist movement more effectively than rounded gravel, making it suitable for areas exposed to vehicle traffic, heavy equipment, and changing ground conditions.
#5 limestone is popular because its broad stone-size range provides a strong balance of load distribution, stability, and drainage. The larger particles help support heavier loads, while the smaller pieces fill some of the spaces between the stone and create a more stable layer than uniformly sized drainage gravel. It settles firmly when placed and mechanically compacted, but it will not bind as tightly as crusher run or dense-grade aggregate because it contains fewer fines.
