Dense graded aggregate is a compactable construction material made from a well-graded blend of crushed stone, smaller aggregate, and stone dust. Commonly known as quarry process, QP, crusher run, or 1-inch minus, it typically contains particles ranging from fine stone dust up to approximately 1 inch in size.
The combination of coarse stone and fines allows the material to compact into a dense, stable layer. The larger aggregate provides load-bearing strength, while the smaller particles fill the spaces between the stone and help create a tighter, more uniform surface.
When properly spread, moisture-conditioned, graded, and mechanically compacted, DGA forms a strong foundation that helps resist rutting, shifting, settlement, and surface movement under vehicle traffic, construction equipment, and structural loads. Its dense composition makes it especially useful for base and sub-base applications where long-term stability is required.
Unlike clean or washed stone, dense graded aggregate contains fines that reduce open voids and allow the material to bind together under pressure. This makes it a better choice for compacted road base and structural support, while clean stone is generally preferred for applications where unrestricted drainage is the primary goal.
DGA is commonly installed beneath asphalt, concrete, brick pavers, patios, driveways, parking areas, and access roads. It creates a firm transition between the prepared subgrade and the finished surface, helping distribute weight and support consistent elevations across the project area.
The material can also be used as a finished gravel surface for rural driveways, construction entrances, equipment routes, and other unpaved areas. With proper grading and compaction, it provides dependable traction and a durable working surface for repeated traffic.
Dense graded aggregate is widely used in residential, commercial, municipal, roadway, and civil construction because it combines strength, compaction, coverage, and versatility in one practical material. Exact stone type and gradation may vary by quarry and regional specification.
