#4 granite, also known as #4 stone, large crushed granite, coarse granite aggregate, or granite stabilization stone, is a durable, angular aggregate commonly used for structural support, drainage, erosion control, and heavy-duty site preparation. It typically consists of granite pieces ranging from approximately 1 1/2 inches to 2 1/2 inches, although exact gradation may vary by quarry and regional specification.
Its large particle size creates open spaces that allow water to move freely through the aggregate, while the rough, fractured edges help the stones interlock and remain stable under heavy loads. Granite’s natural hardness and resistance to abrasion make #4 granite especially well suited for areas exposed to vehicle traffic, equipment use, runoff, and changing ground conditions.
#4 granite is popular for projects that require more mass and load-bearing support than smaller clean stone such as #57 granite. It performs well as a deep base, drainage layer, or stabilization material beneath driveways, access roads, parking areas, foundations, and construction zones. Its substantial size also makes it effective for slope reinforcement and erosion-control projects where long-term durability is important.
