#2 limestone, also known as #2 stone, large crushed limestone, coarse limestone aggregate, or stabilization stone, is a heavy-duty angular aggregate used for structural support, drainage, and ground stabilization. It typically ranges from approximately 1 1/2 inches to 2 1/2 inches in size, although exact gradation may vary by quarry and regional specification.
Its large stone size creates open spaces that allow water to move through freely while providing strong load distribution over soft or unstable ground. The fractured edges help the material interlock and resist movement better than rounded gravel, making it suitable for high-load areas, wet conditions, and demanding construction environments.
#2 limestone is commonly used as a deep base or reinforcement layer where smaller aggregate may sink, shift, or become clogged. It provides a stable foundation beneath roads, driveways, parking areas, and construction access routes, and can be topped with smaller crushed stone to create a smoother finished surface. Because of its coarse texture, it is generally used below grade rather than as a final walking or driving surface.
