Asphalt millings (unscreened)

Unscreened asphalt millings, also known as recycled asphalt pavement, reclaimed asphalt pavement, RAP, or crushed asphalt millings, are recycled roadway materials made up of fine asphalt particles and larger broken pavement pieces. Because the material is left unscreened, it can contain a broad range of particle sizes, commonly from fines up to several inches depending on the source and milling process.

Produced from removed or milled asphalt pavement, unscreened millings contain a mixture of crushed aggregate, asphalt-coated particles, and larger pavement fragments. The broad gradation allows smaller particles to fill spaces between larger pieces, helping the material settle and compact into a firm layer when properly spread, graded, and mechanically compacted.

Residual asphalt binder within the material can also contribute to surface cohesion, although performance depends on the source material, particle size, temperature, moisture conditions, placement, and level of compaction. Compared with screened asphalt millings, unscreened RAP has a rougher and less uniform texture but is often better suited for applications where coverage, stabilization, and bulk material volume are more important than a smooth finished surface.

Unscreened asphalt millings are commonly used by paving contractors, excavation crews, builders, farms, property managers, municipalities, industrial operators, and commercial construction projects. They are especially useful for road base, construction entrances, haul roads, equipment yards, temporary access routes, and large site-development projects where a recycled pavement material can be placed and compacted over a wide area.

For road and access projects, unscreened millings can be used to build up low areas, strengthen existing gravel surfaces, improve construction access, and provide a working layer for vehicle and equipment traffic. Larger pieces help provide structure while the finer material fills voids and improves compaction across the installed surface.

Compared with screened asphalt millings, unscreened material generally requires more grading and may produce a rougher finished surface because of the larger and more irregular pavement pieces. Screened millings are typically preferred for driveways, parking areas, and finish surfaces where more consistent sizing is important, while unscreened RAP is often selected for base work, stabilization, temporary roads, and heavy site use.

Exact particle size, asphalt content, color, and consistency can vary significantly depending on the pavement source and processing method. For larger contractor, agricultural, municipal, industrial, or commercial projects, unscreened asphalt millings are commonly supplied in bulk and delivered by dump truck directly to the property or job site.
