#9 limestone, also known as #9 stone, small limestone chips, or fine crushed limestone, is a clean, angular aggregate commonly used for leveling, paving, drainage, and surface-finishing projects. It typically ranges from approximately 1/8 inch to 3/8 inch, although exact sizing and sieve gradation vary by quarry, state, and local specification. In some regional DOT gradations, #9 limestone may include particles up to approximately 1/2 inch.
Its relatively small stone size allows the material to spread evenly and settle into a smooth, firm layer. The angular particles interlock more effectively than rounded gravel, helping the stone resist movement while maintaining spaces that allow water to pass through.
#9 limestone is popular because it provides a finer and more comfortable finished surface than larger aggregates such as #57 limestone, while remaining cleaner and more permeable than limestone screenings or stone dust. It is especially useful as a thin leveling or finishing layer over a properly prepared and compacted base.
