#3 granite, also known as #3 stone, large crushed granite, coarse granite aggregate, or granite stabilization stone, is a durable, angular aggregate commonly used for structural support, drainage, erosion control, and heavy-duty site preparation. It typically consists of granite pieces ranging from approximately 1 inch to 2.5 inches, providing the size and mass needed for demanding residential, commercial, and construction applications. Some regional or quarry gradations may include larger particles up to about 3 inches.
The large particles create open spaces that allow water to move freely through the aggregate, while the rough, fractured edges help the stones interlock and remain stable under heavy loads. Granite’s natural hardness and resistance to abrasion provide long-term durability in areas exposed to vehicle traffic, equipment use, runoff, and changing ground conditions.
#3 granite is commonly selected for projects that require greater strength and drainage capacity than smaller aggregates such as #57 granite. It performs especially well as a deep base, structural backfill, or stabilization layer and can be topped with smaller compactable stone to create a smoother finished surface.
