Crusher run gravel, also known as crush and run, crusher run stone, crusher run aggregate, or road base, is a dense, compactable mixture of crushed stone and stone dust commonly used for driveways, roads, parking areas, building pads, and construction foundations. Depending on the region and local specification, similar materials may also be sold as aggregate base course (ABC) or graded aggregate base (GAB).
Produced at quarries and aggregate plants, crusher run is typically made as a 1-inch minus or 3/4-inch minus material, meaning it contains crushed stone ranging from the specified top size down to fine stone dust. The larger particles provide structure and load-bearing capacity, while the smaller particles and fines fill the spaces between the stone and help the material compact into a dense, stable layer. Exact sizing and gradation can vary by quarry, supplier, and local specification.
Unlike clean stone such as #57 gravel, crusher run contains a significant amount of fines. These fines allow the material to pack tightly when properly graded, watered, and mechanically compacted, creating a firm surface that is better suited for structural base applications than for projects requiring open drainage.
Crusher run is widely used beneath gravel driveways, asphalt, concrete, pavers, and other finished surfaces. It provides a stable foundation that helps distribute vehicle and equipment loads and can reduce movement, rutting, and settlement when installed over properly prepared ground.
This makes crusher run a common choice for homeowners, contractors, builders, paving crews, farms, property managers, municipalities, and commercial construction projects. It is used for everything from residential driveway bases and shed pads to parking lots, construction entrances, equipment yards, private roads, and larger site-development work.
Crusher run can also be used to build up low areas, improve weak or uneven ground, and establish grades before additional base or surface materials are installed. Because it compacts densely, it is generally better suited for stabilization and structural support than clean, open-graded stone.
Compared with #57 stone or other clean aggregates, crusher run provides less drainage but significantly better compaction. #57 stone is typically selected where water movement, drainage, or clean backfill is required, while crusher run is generally preferred for compacted road bases, driveway foundations, parking areas, and other load-bearing surfaces.
Exact stone type, color, top size, and gradation vary between local quarries and aggregate suppliers. For larger residential, contractor, agricultural, municipal, or commercial projects, crusher run is commonly supplied in bulk and delivered by dump truck directly to the property or job site.
