Concrete Sand

Concrete sand is a clean, coarse construction sand commonly used for concrete production, paver installation, pipe bedding, drainage, and general site preparation. Also referred to as washed concrete sand or coarse construction sand, it is typically screened and washed to produce a relatively consistent gradation suitable for residential, commercial, landscaping, and infrastructure projects.

Produced at sand plants, quarries, and aggregate facilities, concrete sand is processed to remove excess silt, clay, debris, and unwanted fine particles. This creates a cleaner aggregate that blends evenly with cement, water, and coarse stone in concrete mixes and is also easier to spread, grade, and place across construction sites.

In concrete production, the coarse sand particles fill spaces between larger aggregate and form an important part of the finished mix. Concrete sand is commonly used in ready-mix and site-mixed concrete for slabs, foundations, footings, sidewalks, driveways, curbs, and other structural or general construction work.

Its coarse texture also makes concrete sand useful as a bedding and leveling material beneath pavers, patios, walkways, retaining-wall systems, and other hardscape features. When installed over a properly compacted aggregate base, it creates a workable setting layer that allows pavers and stones to be positioned accurately and maintained at a consistent elevation.

The clean composition and controlled gradation also allow water to move through the material while providing a stable bedding layer. For this reason, concrete sand is commonly used around pipes, utility lines, foundations, drainage systems, trenches, and other areas where a clean granular material is required.

Concrete sand can also be incorporated into certain masonry and mortar mixes depending on the required specification and finish. Compared with mason sand, it generally has a coarser texture and larger particle size, making it better suited for concrete, bedding, site work, and applications where a smoother masonry finish is not the primary requirement.

This makes concrete sand a common choice for homeowners, concrete contractors, builders, landscapers, paving crews, property managers, municipalities, and commercial construction projects. It can be used for anything from small patio and driveway work to larger concrete pours, utility installations, site-development projects, and infrastructure construction.

Concrete sand is also used in some horse arenas, riding surfaces, volleyball courts, recreational areas, and landscape projects. Suitability for these uses depends on the specific source, particle shape, gradation, drainage requirements, and intended surface performance.

Exact gradation can vary by quarry, supplier, and regional specification, so material should be selected according to the requirements of the project. For larger residential, contractor, municipal, landscaping, or commercial jobs, concrete sand is commonly supplied in bulk and delivered by dump truck directly to the property or job site.
