INDOT #2 slag, also known as #2 steel slag, INDOT slag aggregate, or specification-grade coarse slag, is a heavy-duty angular material produced from processed steel slag to meet applicable Indiana Department of Transportation requirements. It typically consists of large particles approximately 2 to 3 inches in size, although exact gradation may vary by approved source and project specification.
Its substantial size, high density, and rough fractured texture provide strong load distribution and dependable structural support under traffic, heavy equipment, and demanding site conditions. The angular particles interlock firmly while the open spaces between them allow water to move through the aggregate, creating a durable combination of strength, drainage, and stability.
INDOT #2 slag is widely used in roadway, industrial, commercial, and infrastructure construction where long-term performance and resistance to wear are essential. Its dense composition makes it especially effective as a deep stabilization or reinforcement layer beneath smaller compactable materials, helping strengthen soft ground and support high-load surfaces.
Common Applications of INDOT #2 Slag
- Heavy-duty road base and sub-base layers
- Construction entrances and industrial haul roads
- Site stabilization and structural fill
- Heavy-equipment yards and staging areas
- Base reinforcement over soft or unstable ground
- Erosion control and washout protection
- Culvert and drainage reinforcement
- Municipal and infrastructure construction projects
