Stone Size Ranges and Their Uses:

Upper Range (4" down to 2"):
This range includes larger stones, most commonly size of your fist or bigger. Products such as Rip Rap  can be significantly larger depending on the size chosen. These are heavy and durable stones, making them excellent for decorative purposes or for base layer where heavy equipment is runned on. They are also ideal for creating borders, outlining gardens, or using along driveways, where their size and weight add both functionality and aesthetics.

Mid Range (2" down to 1/2"):
Products in this range include Granite and Limestone Gravel, Pea Gravel. These materials are well-suited mid to top layer on driveways, providing both functional support and aesthetic versatility. These stones offer similar performance, but each has its own unique look, making them a popular choice for various outdoor applications.

Lower Range (1/2" down to fines):
This category includes Crusher Run, Screenings, Sand, and Soil. These materials are highly compactible, making them perfect for creating a strong, stable base layer in construction projects. They are ideal for use under driveways, walkways, and in applications where compaction is essential.

Specific Recommendations:

  • For support of heavy vehicles: Choose #2 to #4 stone for the most robust foundation.
  • For standard driveways: Go for #53 to #73 for an ideal balance of durability and cost-effectiveness.
  • For more decorative driveways: Opt for 1/2" to 3/8"  gravel for an attractive, functional finish.
  • For comfortable walkways: Use #8, 9 or 11 for a smoother, more walkable surface.

Choosing the right gravel size ensures your project lasts longer and performs well, no matter the application!
