DIY: Building a Gravel Road Quick Guide

Steps to Build a Gravel Road:

1. Planning and Design
   • Determine the road path.
   • Mark boundaries and plan for drainage.
2. Clearing and Excavation
   • Clear the area of vegetation, topsoil, and debris.
   • Excavate to the required depth (typically 12-18 inches).
3. Base Layer Preparation
   • Lay geotextile fabric to prevent weed growth and improve stability.

4. Laying the Sub-base
   • Spread a layer of larger stones (sub-base) to a depth of about 6-8 inches.

   • Compact this layer as well to ensure stability.
6. Final Surface Layer
   • Spread a top layer of smaller, crushed gravel (surface layer) to a depth of 2-4 inches.
   • Compact the surface layer to create a smooth, durable finish.
7. Finishing Touches
   • Shape the road with a slight crown (higher in the center) for water runoff.
   • Add additional gravel to any low spots and compact again.
8. Maintenance
   • Regularly check for potholes, erosion, and add gravel as needed.
   • Ensure drainage systems are clear and functioning properly.
